September 23 - 24, 2013
NEW YORK CITY
The International District Energy Association (IDEA) and Euroheat & Power will welcome the world to New York City, September 23-34, 2013 for the Third Global District Energy Climate Awards Summit. The Awards, adjudicated by International Energy Agency (IEA), will recognize exemplary district energy systems that produce real environmental and economic benefits in cities and communities around the globe.
Event planning began 18 months ago, with the shared objective of IDEA and Euroheat & Power to expand the reach of the IEA Awards beyond Europe and to encourage more participation from North America, the Middle East and Asia. In looking at possible venues, it was determined that New York City would be best to attract a global audience. Additionally, it allows the Awards Summit to coincide with the Clinton Global Initiative; Climate Week NYC; and the UN General Assembly, helping to raise awareness of the district energy industry; connect with like-minded organizations, and potentially capture greater visibility in a major media market.
Today, the timing and location of the Third Global District Energy Awards Summit in NYC holds great promise:
· The terrible destruction from SuperStorm Sandy in 2012 is galvanizing action on more robust energy infrastructure for resilient city-building, led by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
· On June 25, 2013, President Obama announced his Climate Change Initiative calling for Executive Action to mitigate carbon emissions, dramatically raising the profile of climate change in the US.
· IDEA has recently helped to develop valuable federal energy legislation that, if passed, would stimulate dramatic increase in new district energy system development and expansion across the US.
The first Global District Energy Climate Awards were held in 2009 in Copenhagen as part of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting. The 2nd iteration of the Global District Energy Climate Awards was held in 2011 in Paris, France in conjunction with the 35th Euroheat & Power Congress.
